Ultracapacitors for Data Centers
Ultracapacitors are used within power electronics subsystems at the rack level, including Peak Load Shaving Shelf (PLSS) architectures, to absorb and release power almost instantaneously and support highly volatile power consumption patterns in AI data centers.

Key Use Cases: AI Rack Stabilization & Peak Load Shaving

Stabilizing High-Density AI Server Racks
AI server rack power density is increasing from 10–15 kW to over 100 kW per rack.
- Each PLSS tray can contain up to 75 ultracapacitor cells
- Typically, four PLSS shelves per rack

Peak Load Shaving Shelves (PLSS) for Rack-Level Power Support
Ultracapacitors are used in PLSS architectures.
- Reduce surge risk by being able to absorb and release power almost instantaneously to smooth rapid load fluctuations
- Maximize existing infrastructure by dealing with power peaks at the rack level, mitigating need to constantly upgrade broader systems

Generator Bridge
- Provide reserve power for several seconds to allow generator, fuel cell, or ESS to engage
Benefits for Data Center Power Stability

Very High Power Density
- Very high power density (Watts per liter)
- High specific power (Watts per kilogram)

Low Internal Resistance
- Very efficient charge and discharge (typically 95–98% round‑trip)
- High current capability

Long Life
- DC Life: up to 15 years
- Cycle Life: up to 1M cycles

Safety
- Can be maintained and shipped in a totally discharged state
- No thermal “runaway”

Rugged
- Excellent shock and vibration resistance

Broad Operating Temperature Range
- Operating temperature range from -40°C to 65°C (85°C)
